Over 58,000 hectares farmland placed under crops in Myanmar as flooding recedes

About 58,730 hectares of farmland have been under crops in Myanmar as flooding receded, official sources said Saturday.

The re-cultivated area includes 44,550 hectares in the worst- hit Rakhine state.

Deadly flooding in the Southeast Asian nation since June has inundated more than 572,374 hectares of farmland, destroying 213, 974 hectares across the country including 117,943 hectares in Rakhine state, according to official figures.

According to updated figure of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, nationwide death toll from the severe flooding in the country rose to more than 106 so far with Rakhine state suffering most casualties, affecting more than 1.3 million people across the country.

Deadly flood, triggered by heavy rainfall since June, has affected 14 regions and states in Myanmar, destroying houses, farmland, railway lines, bridges and roads.

The Myanmar government declared on July 31 four disaster zones namely Rakhine, Chin, Sagaing and Magway, of which Rakhine state was the worst-hit. Endi
