Uganda set to host East African Community Military Games

Uganda is set to host the 9th Edition of the East African Community (EAC) Military Games on Aug. 16-26.

Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, the Uganda Army spokesman told Xinhua that the regional Games that bring together sporting soldiers will attract Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya and hosts Uganda.

He explained that the Games that will feature football, basketball, handball, Netball and athletics will run under the theme 'One People, One Destiny' through EAC Military Games and Cultural Event 2015'.

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces is expected to grace the opening ceremony on August 16th at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Brig. Moses Rwakitarate, Chairman of the organising committee said that they will be hosting close to 450 athletes and called upon all Ugandans to come in big numbers to cheer the teams.

Simba SC, one of the team featuring in the Azam Uganda Premier League will represent Uganda, while Lenya Premier league side Ulinzi FC will also represent Kenya.

The regional games are aimed at, among other things, building cohesion and exchange of culture among EAC military Institutions, contribute to confidence building and nurturing a spirit of sportsmanship among the EAC Defense Forces.

Kenya won the Games last year while Uganda came second.Last year Uganda snatched gold in basketball and bagged two silver medals after finishing second in netball and handball. Kenya took credit with eight trophies, including individual honours after winning in football, handball and women's cross-country. Endi
