The Norwegian government wants to dump 1,200 tons of radioactive waste on an island in the Oslo Fjord against the will of the company which owns the disposal site, local media reported on Friday.
The government asked hazardous waste disposal company NOAH last year if it could receive the radioactive waste on the island of Langoya, about 50 km southwest of Oslo, according to the online edition of local newspaper VG.
The company said it made two technical evaluations and the conclusions were that it could not take the radioactive sludge from the Sove mines in the county of Telemark, which dates back to top-secret nuclear experiments in the post war years.
But the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries wans to push forward with the plan and has now hired the Swedish Defence Research Agency in Stockholm to carry out the assessment, VG reported. Endit
