Uganda She Cranes out of 2015 Netball World Cup

Xinhua, August 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda She Cranes have been eliminated from the 2015 Netball World Cup currently going on in Sydney, Australia.

The Uganda She Cranes lost their second quarter final group game to Jamaica 59-47 on Thursday morning to dash their hopes of making it to the medal bracket.

"I think our team put up a good performance despite being lowly ranked. They deserve to be taken as heroes because they made it to the quarter finals. No Ugandan team has reached the quarters of any World Cup event," Japser Aligawesa, Secretary general of the National Council of Sports (NCS) told Xinhua.

Coach Rashid Mubiru's team will now have to settle for qualification matches for 5th-8th. The She Cranes needed to win the remaining two games against Jamaica and New Zealand to have any chance of making it to the semi final stage. On Tuesday the She Cranes lost to Malawi 59-53 in their first Group E game.

Against the world's fourth ranked team, the She Cranes had 60% time in possession, but lost out in turn overs. Team captain Peace Proscovia was this time restricted to only 18 points from 24 attempts, while Racheal Nanyonga picked 29 points from 34 attempts.

Jhaniele Fowler Reid who lasted 30 minutes on the court before picking an injury scored 23 points from 25 attempts. Romelda Aiken who came on as a substitute had a 100% return scoring 16 points from 16 attempts.

The win pushes Jamaica to second place above Malawi who they play in the last group game on Thursday. Table leaders New Zealand who stopped Jamaica and Malawi will face Uganda She Cranes on Friday. Endi
