Xinhua, August 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso's National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) announced on Tuesday that a total of 6,944 candidates, including 2,074 women, had been approved to contest for the Oct. 11, 2015 legislative elections.

The country's parliament has a total of 127 seats, and a total of 78 political parties' lists as well as 18 lists of independent groups have been approved to compete in the elections.

In October 2014, Burkina Faso witnessed a popular uprising that deposed President Blaise Compaore after 27 years in power.

Over 5.5 million Burkinabes will be expected to turn out on Oct. 11 to elect the country's new president and members of parliament.

The elections will mark the end of a one year transition that began after the fall of Compaore who is currently living in exile in Cote d'Ivoire. Endit
