Bulgaria announces local elections, referendum on distance voting

Xinhua, August 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has announced that local elections and a national referendum on remote electronic voting will take place on Oct. 25 this year.

In the plebiscite, Bulgarian citizens will answer the question "Do you support the idea to be able to vote from a distance, electronically at elections and referendums?" said Deputy Chairperson of the Central Electoral Commission Maria Musorlieva on Monday.

"Around 850,000 Bulgarians abroad have voting rights," said Prof. Lyubomir Gavrilov, chairman of Temporary Municipal Councils of Bulgarians in France.

The 1.1 million Bulgarians living abroad should not be kept silent in the local elections, he added.

Prof. Mihail Konstantinov, political analyst and former deputy chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, said the upcoming local elections would be closely fought in large municipalities such as Plovdiv, Burgas and Sofia. Endit
