UN appoints new humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon

Xinhua, August 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag announced on Friday the appointment of Philippe Lazzarini as her new deputy and representative of the UN Development Program in the country.

Lazzarini is a veteran in international relations and aid missions, Kaag's media office said in a statement.

Born in 1964, Lazzarini is a Swiss national, and holds an MBA from the University of Lausanne and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Neuchatel.

The UN statement said that Lazzarini "brings with him rich experience in international aid and coordination, and he took part in the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia as Deputy Special Representative, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator."

It pointed that Lazzarini, who succeeds Ross Mountain, also held a number of high-ranking positions at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and served in field positions in Iraq, Angola, Somalia and Palestine.

Before joining the UN in 2003, he headed the marketing department of a private bank in Geneva and was the Deputy Head of Communication at the International Committee of the Red Cross for 10 years.

He also headed the ICRC delegation in Rwanda, Angola and Sarajevo and was an ICRC delegate in Southern Sudan, Jordan, Gaza and Beirut. Endit
