Croatian president calls Egyptian counterpart to discuss hostage crisis

Xinhua, August 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic on Friday called her Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to discuss the hostage crisis involving a Croatian citizen Tomislav Salopek.

She said she was sure "that we are doing everything in our power to resolve the situation," according to the Presidential Office.

On Friday, Salopek's father Zlatko Salopek publicly pleaded the abductors to release his son, saying his son was in Egypt only for earning money for his family.

Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic and Salopek's wife and sister went to Cairo on Thursday to help solve the issue.

Salopek, 31, a father of two, was kidnapped in Cairo on July 22 on his way to work by armed men who were believed from the Egyptian affiliate of the IS group.

The IS threatened on Wednesday to kill Salopek, who was working as a topographer for French oil company Compagnie Generale de Geophysique (CGG), within 48 hours if Muslim women jailed in Egypt are not freed. Endit
