Xinhua, August 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Militants equipped with arms and suicide vests attacked a police checkpoint in Kandahar city on Thursday, leaving two attackers dead, spokesman for provincial government Samim Khapalwak said.

"Two terrorists equipped with assault rifles and suicide vests attacked a police checkpoint in 4th police district in Kandahar city at 03:15 p.m. local time today, triggering gun battles," Khpalwak told Xinhua.

One of the attackers was attempting to blew himself up but police shot him dead; while another continued firing, the official said, adding the second attacker was killed after minutes of fire exchange.

A police constable was injured in the firefight which lasted for a while, Khapalwak said.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in contact with media claimed that the militants attacked two police checkpoints in Kandahar city and inflicted casualties, a claim refuted by Khapalwak as baseless. Endi
