Over half million passengers welcomed at Malta airport in July

Xinhua, August 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malta International Airport (MIA) welcomed 547,970 passengers in July, an increase of 7.1 percent in passenger traffic comparing with the same period of last year.

The figure also holds the record for the highest number of passengers welcomed at MIA in one month.

In a notice on the Stock Exchange, the airport said these figures could be attributed to an increased seat load factor, which measured the percentage of filled seats on each flight, of 85.2 percent and an increase of 4.4 percent in aircraft movements.

The most significant growth in July was recorded on Italian routes, which saw a rise of 11.6 percent when compared to 2014, ranking Italy second among Malta International Airport's top markets.

Britain holds its position as Malta's biggest tourism market with an increase of 4.3 percent, with 137,152 passengers last month alone. In total, more than 700,000 passengers have travelled along Maltese-British routes so far this year.

Taken into account several elements such as the growth rate for the first six months, the positive start to summer and a cautiously optimistic view of the remaining quarters, MIA is expecting to host at least 4.5 million passengers by the end of the year, an increase of more than 200,000 over 2014.
