UN chief reiterates continued support to AU's peace effort

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reiterated the continued support of the United Nations (UN) to the consolidated action of the African Union (AU) to preserve peace and security on the African continent.
The Secretary-General made the remarks at a time when he met and held talks with Smail Chergui, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, who just concluded a working visit to New York on Monday, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc.
Kicked off on July 29, the visit of the AU Commissioner culminated in an in-depth meeting with the UN Secretary-General, noted the statement.
The discussions between the two officials focused on the state of the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union, and conflicts in Africa, such as the current situations in the Great Lakes and the Sahel region, including Northern Mali, as well as South Sudan.
They also dwelt upon issues related to the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa, as well as the conclusions of the UN High Level Panel on the review of Peacekeeping Operations, according to the statement.
At the conclusion of their discussions, the two parties expressed their satisfaction at the strategic nature of the AU-UN partnership and their willingness to continue efforts to deepen and broaden the cooperation between the two organizations.

On the occasion, the AU Commissioner assessed with the different parties the joint action of the two organizations in Africa and also exchanged views on ways of enhancing the consistency of joint activities. Endit
