Portuguese criminal police detain former head of public enterprise

Portugal's criminal police (PJ) revealed Tuesday that a former head of a public enterprise from Portugal's transport sector was detained at Lisbon airport.

Police said in a statement that he was detained for crimes involving embezzlement and abuse of power, practiced in the framework of cooperation work with Angola.

The illicit benefit discovered up to now amounts to 100,000 euros (110,000 U.S. dollars), according to the statement.

Local media revealed the man is called Rui Andrade Marques, a former administrator of national railway company CP and transport consultant Fernave.

He has been brought to trial and faces a payment of 37,500 euros.

The criminal police also said that during the course of the operation searches took place and that diverse material was confiscated related to the practice of criminal activity under investigation. (1 euro = 1.10 U.S. dollars) Endit
