Wolfsburg beat Bayern 5-4 on penalties to clinch German Supercup

Xinhua, August 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Wolfsburg shocked Bayern with the late 1-1 equalizer to wrap up the German Supercup 5-4 on penalties at outsold Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.

Wolfsburg clinched the first title of the season as they overcame Bayern Munich in the Supercup, where the German Cup winners encounter the Bundesliga champions.

The "Bavarians" dominated the encounter and took the lead through Arjen Robben early in the second half. It looked liked Bayern could protect their neat 1-0 lead to the end but Wolfsburg's Nicklas Bendtner restored parity in the dying minutes of the game to force Bayern into the penalty shootout. The "Wolves" converted all their attempts from the spot meanwhile Xabi Alonso's shot was blocked by Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels.

Bayern Munich took the reigns from the kick-off and they nearly got rewarded with eight minutes into the clash but Jerome Boateng was just able to rattle the bar from a promising position. Josep Guardiola's men set the pace at the first half whereas Wolfsburg needed 22 minutes to work out their first shot on target, when Ivan Perisic tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with a long-range shot.

Bayern's new arrival Douglas Costa had the best chance to break the deadlock for the visitors but the Brazilian squandered the opportunity with a weak pass to Robert Lewandowski at the 32nd minute.

Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne had the golden chance to stun the visitors with the opener against the run of the game but the Belgian international failed to slot home the ball into the open goal moments later.

However, Bayern remained dangerous and rewarded their dominant performance when Douglas Costa passed from the left wing into the danger zone where Robben tapped in the opener at the near post from very close range at the 49th minute.

The "Wolves" kept it bowling and caught the "Bavarians" flat-footed late in the game as De Bruyne assisted Nicklas Bendtner, who poked home the pinpoint square pass by the Belgian to make it 1-1 on the scoreboards with just one minute remaining in the clash.

After the 1-1 draw the penalty shoot out had to bring the decision. Wolfsburg turned the tides at the penalty shoot-out, as Bayern's Xabi Alonso was unable to overcome Wolfsburg keeper Casteels. Wolfsburg converted all their penalties from the spot to seal the deal and the Supercup with a 5-4 victory on penalties. Endi
