German CF Mario Gomez on loan move to Turkish Besiktas

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Turkish side Besiktas have sealed a season-long loan deal for Fiorentina German striker Mario Gomez with an option to make the move permanent. The 30-year-old arrived in Istanbul on Thursday, local BGN News reported.

The Istanbul side will sign the player on a season-long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent. Mario Gomez will get EUR 3.8 million in wages. The striker landed Istanbul at 2:45 pm local time and the excited fans showed him the hospitality with slogans and shouts at the airport.

A prolific goal scorer and menacing presence in the penalty box, Gomez has none-the-less struggled to find the back of the net for the La Viola, scoring only 8 goals in 20 games in the last season of the Serie A.

Besiktas have so far secured the transfer of Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma and wing-back Andreas Beck. The Istanbul black eagle has had to go back to the drawing board with coach Slaven Bilic and star striker Demba Ba' s move to China at the end of the 2014-2015 season.

Last season Besiktas competed for the Turkish league championship until the last weeks, finishing third, and had eliminated Liverpool in the UEFA Europea League round of 32; they concluded a commendable campaign given the limited budget the club had as they await for the construction of their new stadium.
