Myanmar ruling party leader submits application to compete in general election

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chairman of Myanmar's ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Shwe Mann on Thursday submitted his application at the Taungoo District Election Commission for competing in the forthcoming multi-party general election scheduled for Nov. 8, according to his social website.

The application submission followed his recent announcement to run in his native place -- Phyu township constituency of Bago Region.

U Shwe Mann, also speaker of Myanmar's House of Representatives and Union Parliament, won the 2010 multi-party general election from Zeyarthiri township constituency in Nay Pyi Taw as a representative to the House of Representatives (Lower House).

On Wednesday, the USDP nominated 149 parliamentary candidates to contest in all the constituencies in Yangon region.

The 149 nominated candidates are enlisted for competing in 45 constituencies for the seats of the House of Representatives ( Lower House), 12 constituencies for the House of Nationalities ( Upper House), 90 constituencies for the Region or State Parliament and two constituencies for Region or State Parliaments for national races.

The party is expected to announce the total number of its nominated candidates for all constituencies across the country on Aug. 5.

The nation's election commission has designated a total of 1, 171 constituencies across the country for vote for four levels of parliament representatives, with 330 constituencies set for election of the House of Representatives, 168 constituencies for the House of Nationalities, 644 constituencies for Region or State Parliament and 29 constituencies for Region or State Parliaments for national races.

The 2015 general election is to produce parliamentary representatives to the next term of parliament and the next-term government will be formed in early 2016. Endi
