Vanuatu's former PM Edward Natapei dies at 61

Vanuatu's opposition leader and former Prime Minister Edward Natapei died on Tuesday at the age of 61, local media confirmed.

According to Radio Vanuatu News, Natapei died of an asthmatic attack around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Natapei was elected as Vanuatu's prime minister on three separate occasions: 2001-2002, 2002-2004, and 2008-2010. Besides, he occupied various other positions, notably including speaker of parliament.

At his death, Natapei was leader of the opposition and president of the Vanua'aku Party.

A state funeral is expected to be held for him. Endi
