Brazil midfielder Fred fails doping test

Xinhua, July 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazil international midfielder Fred tested positive to a banned substance during the Copa America in Chile last month, Brazilian media reported Monday.

The 22-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk player is awaiting results of a B sample after traces of the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide were found in his urine, Folha de S.Paulo reported.

Normally used to control hypertension and cardiovascular problems, hydrochlorothiazide is also a known masking agent for other illegal drugs.

Fred is currently in Turkey where Shakhtar are preparing for the upcoming European season.

Fred was part of Brazil's starting lineup for the team's opening Copa America matches against Peru and Colombia before losing his place to Philippe Coutinho.

The B sample results were reportedly due to be released on Tuesday.  Endi
