Czech police offer to guard Hungarian-Serbian border over influx of refugees

Xinhua, July 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Czech Interior Minister Milan Chovanec said that Czech policemen should guard the border between Hungary and Serbia because of the influx of refugees.

He made the remarks after talks with his Austrian colleague Johanna Mikl-Leitner on Monday.

Most refugees are heading to Austria from Hungary through Serbia. There are tens of thousands of migrants in Austria now.

Chovanec said the Czech Republic offered police officers, equipment and and finances to Budapest, and 20 Czech policemen were to patrol the Hungarian-Serbian border as of August.

But Hungary stopped the project, and police chiefs from EU countries will discuss it at the end of July, said Chovanec.

Chovanec said that the facilities for refugees in Austria are overcrowded. He said the Czech Republic has increased the capacities of its facilities to avoid getting in a similar situation.

He said that they are considering further one thousand beds for the refugees, but they also have to deal with the problem of how to return the refugees to their countries.

Austria is experiencing an influx of refugees who come into the country mainly from the Middle East and North Africa. Slovakia last week promised to provide temporary accommodation to 500 refugees who have sought asylum in Austria.

Chovanec demands that 4000 new policemen are hired and billions of crowns are added to the Interior Ministry's budget. Czech police has detained 91 illegal migrants over last weekend. Endit
