Slovakia has among lowest debt per capita in EU

Xinhua, July 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovakia's debt per capita stood at 7,551 euros (about 8,382 U.S. dollars) at the end of the first quarter of 2015, which was down by around 300 euros per capita year-on-year, according to Eurostat data Monday.

"Only seven EU countries had lower debts per capita than Slovakia," said Postova banka analyst Jana Glasova, citing the data.

The highest debt per capita was recorded by Ireland at 44,213 euros, followed by Belgium at almost 40,000 euros. Conversely the lowest debts per capita in the EU were posted by Estonia at 1,561 euros and Bulgaria at 1,730 euros.

Slovakia's debt was 54 percent of GDP at the end of Q1 2015.

"Slovakia has thus gained a slightly safer distance from the Maastricht criterion that stipulates a permitted debt of 60 percent of GDP. Only 10 EU member countries were better off than Slovakia in this respect," noted Glasova. (1 euro = 1.11 U.S. dollars) Endit
