UN meeting to seek ways to combat trend of people joining IS

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

The special meeting of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee scheduled for Tuesday in Madrid will seek ways to combat the increasing trend of people travelling to join and fight for extremist organizations such as IS.

International experts gathered here on Monday to attend technical sessions on terrorism, which were inaugurated by Spanish Secretaries of State for Security and for Foreign Affairs, Francisco Martinez and Ignacio Ibanez.

Tuesday's meeting will be hosted by Spain's Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz and Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo in Madrid's Palacio del Pardo.

The UN Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) is an organ of the UN Security Council and the meeting in Spain will be the first time it has met outside of New York since 2011.

Around 70 countries will be represented at Tuesday's meeting, along with six inter-regional organizations.

They will focus on three issues: the detection, intervention and prevention of recruitment of foreign terrorist fighters: how to prevent these fighters reaching their destinations and finally: the judgement, punishment and rehabilitation of those who have returned from combat zones. Endit
