Landslides kill 5 in Bangladesh

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Devastating landslides caused by heavy rains hit many houses in Bangladesh's southeastern hilly district Cox's Bazaar Monday morning, killing at least 5 people and leaving over a dozen others injured.

Heavy rains swept through the Cox's Bazaar, some 391 km away of capital Dhaka, and have triggered huge landslides since Sunday.

A police official from Cox's Bazaar told Xinhua via mobile phone that Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh, fire service and police carried out hours of rescue since Monday morning and digged out five bodies.

"Search teams have so far retrieved five bodies including three women and a six-year-old child," said the official, on condition of anonymity.

He said at least four houses were buried in the landslides that occurred early Monday.

As monsoon remains active all over Bangladesh, heavy rainfall has been occurring incessantly in many places across the country since last week.

At least 21 people died in devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains that lashed southeastern hilly districts including Cox's Bazaar last month. Endi
