Half of Philippine families self-rated poor: poll

Xinhua, July 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

More than half of families in the Philippines considered themselves poor, the latest result of a social survey in the country revealed on Monday.

The survey, conducted by Social Weather Station (SWS) from June 5 to 8 among 1,200 adults nationwide showed 51 percent of Filipinos consider their families as poor, which remained unchanged from the same figure three months ago.

The results, however, was worse in ethnic southern region of Mindanao, after the self-rated poverty rating rose by eight points to 70 percent in June from 62 percent in March.

The SWS survey also showed that 37 percent of the families considered themselves food-poor, slightly higher than the 36 percent in the first quarter.

The survey released by coincidence with the delivery of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III's State of the Nation Address on Monday afternoon.

The self-rated poverty rating also went up by two points in the country's capital region of Metro Manila to 33 percent from 31 percent.

The SWS said the median self-rated food poverty threshold, or the monthly budget that a household needs for food so as not to consider their families as food-poor, rose to 10,000 pesos (219.9 U.S. dollars) in Metro Manila in June from 9,000 pesos (197.9 dollars) in March. Endi
