UN Mission slams attack on its camp in Mali

Xinhua, July 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Mission in Mali ( MINUSMA) on Friday condemned an attack on its camp in Aguelhok, which was targeted by mortar fire earlier in the day, prompting the UN Mission to immediately reinforce the camp's security, UN officials said here.

The special representative of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon and head of MINUSMA Mongi Hamdi strongly condemned this cowardly and criminal attack targeting peacekeepers who have come to Mali to assist the Malians in their quest for peace, according to the officials.

Hamdi reiterated that MINUSMA is resolutely determined to continue to meet its responsibilities in support of Mali and its people.

"Preliminary reports indicate that at least four mortar shells landed in the vicinity of the camp," Eri Kaneko, the UN associate spokesperson, said at a daily news briefing here. "There were no casualties and the attack did not cause any material damage."

MINUSMA peacekeepers immediately reinforced the camp's security and sent out patrols to locate the area from where the shells were fired and ensure the safety of the civilian population, said the spokesperson. Endite
