Afghan forces foil Taliban attack on Wasrdoj district

Xinhua, July 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan security forces repulsed Taliban attack on the strategically important Wardoj district in Badakhshan province with Faizabad as its capital 315 km northeast of Kabul on Thursday, deputy to provincial police chief Sakhidad Haidary said.

"A group of Taliban rebels attacked security checkpoints in Tirgaran area of Wardoj district early Thursday triggering gun battle which lasted for a while and militants after leaving several bodies behind fled away," Haidary told Xinhua.

He also added that four bodies of militants are still with local authorities.

However, local people said that the gun battle lasted for several hours which inflicted casualties on both sides.

Taliban militants had several times attempted in the past to capture Wardoj district but failed to make breakthrough.

Security forces have been trying to wipe out militants and ensure law and order across Wardoj and other parts of the mountainous Badakhshan province, the official added.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Badakhshan province have yet to make comment. Endi
