Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority seeks funding for special economic zone

Xinhua, July 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) has sought funding from the finance division of the Bangladeshi government to set up a special economic zone at Anwara upazilla in the port city of Chittagong to attract Chinese investment.

The BEZA has recently sent a proposal to the finance ministry seeking over 420 crore taka interest free fund for acquisition of land for the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ).

Paban Chowdhury, BEZA executive chairman, told Xinhua: "We have sent a letter requesting land acquisition for the project. China is the best friend of Bangladesh. Bangladesh wants to give an opportunity to Chinese investors to invest in Bangladesh."

Chowshury said China Harbour Engineering Company Limited will establish the economic zone on 774 acres of land in Anwara.

"China Harbour Engineering Company should move forward fast and give us a concrete proposal to speed up the implementation of the project," he said.

Earlier, Bangladesh and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Establishment of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Bangladesh during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to China in June last year. Endi
