Marriages rise, births rate down in Latvia in H1

The number of marriages registered in Latvia in the first six months of this year rose against the same period last year, whereas the number of births dropped, the national statistics office reported Tuesday.

The number of marriages rose by 13 percent against the first half of last year to 4,765 in the first half of 2015, according the preliminary demographic data released by the statistics office.

Representatives of the statistics office noted that marriages had been rising in Latvia over the last four years, from 10,800 in 2011 to 12,500 in 2014.

Latvia's birth rate, which continued to pick up in the first quarter of 2015, declined in the second quarter of 2015. Altogether, 10,511 births were registered in Latvia in the first half of 2015, down 1.4 percent from the same period a year ago.

Latvia's population decreased by 4,218 people in the first half of this year.

At the end of June 2015, there were 978,700 people residing in Latvia. Endit
