Moroccan authorities said on Tuesday that they have broken up an Islamic State affiliate (IS) cell which was planning to carry out attacks in the country.
The interior ministry said in a statement that the cell, which was dismantled in the towns of Tangiers, Taounate, Bouznika and Khouribga, has pledged allegiance to IS militant group.
The suspects had been in contact with IS leaders in order to "provide refuge to fighters who had received intensive training in producing explosives and gang warfare," the ministry said.
The statement said the members of the cell had links with former al-Qaida fighters in Afghanistan, adding that they were planning to carry out a series of terrorist operations against security officials and sites in the country.
Earlier in July, Morocco announced the dismantlement of two cells consisting of 17 people, who were suspected of spreading IS extremist ideology and recruiting and sending Moroccans to join its ranks in Syria and Iraq. Endit
