With a penalty scored by Andres Guardado in extra time, Mexico defeated Costa Rica 1-0 on Sunday and qualified to semifinals of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Football Association) Gold Cup.

This will be the fifth consecutive time Mexico qualifies to Gold Cup semifinals. Costa Rica was eliminated in quarterfinals for the third consecutive time.

The match was played Sunday afternoon in MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, before some 74,187 spectators. Both teams had many goal opportunities but only Mexico scored at the last moment.

Mexico's goal was scored in 124th minute after the referee Walter Lopez signaled a foul against Oribe Peralta of Costa Rica on Roy Miller. The penalty was kicked by Guardado, player of Dutch PSV Eindhoven.

Gold Cup semifinals will be played on Wednesday in Georgia Dome, Atlanta. Mexico will face Panama and the current champion, the United States, will play against Jamaica.

Panama defeated Mexico twice in Gold Cup 2013. Endi
