Members of parliament from Pacific island countries gathered in Fiji on Monday, discussing on battling corruption.
The two-day Anti-Corruption Workshop for Pacific Parliamentarians, held in Fiji's tourism hub of Nadi, was being attended by MPs from Fiji, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu.
The workshop is aimed at helping Pacific countries that have yet to accede to the United Nations Convention against Corruption and building political dialogue between Pacific governments.
Welcoming the MPs, Fijian President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau underscored the urgent need for everyone to join hands in the fight against corruption.
"In the Pacific, the consequences of corruption are extremely high, for corruption slowly festers and eventually robs our people of honest, decent, clean and sustainable livelihoods," said Nailatikau.
Pacific Island countries that are already parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption include Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
Countries that are represented at the workshop but are not yet parties to the convention include Nuie, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu. Endi
