2nd Ld Writethru: At least 2 killed in building collapse in Indian capital

Xinhua, July 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two persons were killed Saturday night and six others seriously injured when a four-story building collapsed in the western part of the Indian capital, said police.

At least 10 people are still believed to be trapped in the debris of the building in Western Delhi's Vishnu Garden area and rescuers are trying to find them.

"Two people who were taken to hospital have died. Six persons sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to nearby hospitals," said Dipendra Pathak, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Delhi Range.

Government sent eight fire tenders and teams of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) to carry out rescue operations at the site of the building collapse in a narrow lane, which is typical of lower middle class Delhi residential areas.

The rescue equipment were difficult to be brought into the area as no vehicles could go through it, said police.

The building collapsed when digging was going on at an adjacent plot for construction of a new building, said police.

Building collapse takes place from time to time in Indian cities.

Last April, a three-story residential building collapsed in Delhi's Moti Nagar area after an explosion of gas cylinder, killing one person and injuring eight others. Endi
