Tibet launches commemorative coins ahead of region's 50th anniversary

A set of commemorative coins was issued in Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, by the People's Bank of China on Saturday.
The set includes a golden coin containing 7.776 grams of gold and a silver coin with 31.104 grams of silver, said Losang Zhamdu, vice head of the Lhasa center sub-branch of the bank. The set are legal tender in China.
The coins were launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Tibet Autonomous Region, he said.
The golden coin, which is 22 millimeters in diameter, is worth 100 yuan (about 16 U.S. dollars) and is engraved with a picture of Tibetan Opera.
The value of the silver coin is 10 yuan. It is 40 millimeters in diameter and bears a design depicting a traditional Tibetan house, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and snow-capped mountains.
A total of 15,000 golden coins and 25,000 silver coins are available for purchase.
This is the fifth Tibet-themed coin set released by China's central bank. The previous four sets were launched on the 20th anniversary of the founding of Tibet Autonomous Region, the 50th anniversary of the region's peaceful liberation, the opening of the Qinghai-Tibetan railway and the 60th anniversary of the region's peaceful liberation.
