The UN Security Council is likely to take action on a draft resolution to cement the Iran Nuclear deal next week, Ambassador Gerard Jacobus van Bohemen, who holds the rotating council presidency for July, told reporters here Thursday.
Bohemen, who is the permanent representative of New Zealand to the United Nations, said that the members of the Security Council were still discussing the contents of the draft resolution.
"On the Iran resolution, discussions are still continuing as to when that will be considered," he said. "There's a meeting of experts this afternoon to go through the text and I expect there' ll be action next week."
The landmark Iran deal was reached in Vienna, Austria, Tuesday between Iran, and the five permanent members (P5) of the Security Council -- China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States -- plus Germany.
Bohemen said that the non-permanent members of the Security Council were currently being briefed on the contents of the resolution, which is expected to lift Security Council sanctions against Iran in return for Iran meeting strict conditions regarding its nuclear program.
"We actually met with the ambassador of Iran yesterday who asked to brief the non-P5 members of the council so that they could put their own perspectives on things which was very useful," Bohemen said.
The council has 15 members, including five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.
The council president added that the P5 members had briefed the 10 non-permanent members on Wednesday. Endite
