Ukraine, creditors acknowledge progress in debt-restructuring talks

Xinhua, July 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukraine and its foreign private creditors have achieved progress in their latest round of debt restructuring talks in Washington, said the Ukrainian Finance Ministry on Thursday.

"Progress was made at the meeting on a number of substantive issues and the parties have agreed to focus their attention on narrowing the gaps," said the ministry in a joint statement with the creditors.

Further talks aimed at finalizing the terms of Ukraine's debt operation will be held next week, the statement said.

Since mid-March, Ukraine has been in talks with its private foreign lenders over restructuring of about 15 billion U.S. dollars of the outstanding public debt.

While Kiev is seeking a 40-percent cut of the arrears, its lenders are offering to extend the maturities of the debt and lower the coupons.

As of April 1, Ukraine's total external debt stood at 126 billion dollars or 110.5 percent of the country's gross domestic product. Endi
