Frenchman gored to death in 'bull running' event in Spain

Xinhua, July 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 44-year-old French tourist died on Tuesday after being gored by a bull in the town of Pedreguer.

The victim was taking part in a traditional 'running with bulls' event in the small town of 7,438 inhabitants, which is in the province of Alicante, on the east coast of Spain.

The victim, who has been identified with the initials L. O, had been in the town with friends and the incident happened in the early hours of the morning when one of the bulls, which was running through the streets of the town, charged and gored him.

Spanish media reports said that although doctors were quickly on hand, there was nothing they could do other than confirm his death.

The remaining events scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday were cancelled as a mark of respect.

This tragedy took place shortly before the final running of the bulls in the famous San Fermin celebration in the town of Pamplona.

San Fermin sees a group of six bulls run through the center of Pamplona for eight successive days surrounded by crowds of locals and tourists. Although this year's celebrations did not see any fatalities, every day of the running saw several people treated for injuries such as heavy falls and being trampled on.

Meanwhile the danger of events with bulls has already been made painfully clear this year in Spain as two people were also gored to death in separate events in Tarragona and Caceres during the San Juan celebrations on June 24 and more deaths can be expected as events continue over the summer. Endit
