Muslim feast with police in Australia canceled after protests

Xinhua, July 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

An annual Australian Federal Police (AFP) dinner in Sydney for the Muslim religious festival of Ramadan later this month has been canceled due to community protests.

The feast is aimed at fostering better relations between police and Muslims, but a group called Concerned Muslims Australia (CMA) claiming it was tokenistic.

The group also claimed police had been persecuting Muslims with its counter-terrorism policies and was trying to create a false impression of good relations between Muslims and police.

In a written statement, the AFP said the decision not to host this year's dinner showed the AFP and its partner agencies were consulting with and responding to the community. It said there would be other events in the future.

An AFP Ramadan dinner to be held in Melbourne later this month is scheduled to go ahead. Endi
