UN chief calls on South Sudan authorities to support humanitarian interventions

The United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon has called on South Sudan authorities to fully cooperate with and provide support to the UN team and humanitarian workers that they would be able to provide assistance to the people being affected by the conflict in that country.

During a joint press conference with Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, on Monday on the sideline of the 3rd International Conference on Financing for Development being held in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, he noted that the UN mission in South Sudan is accommodating a huge number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to the on-going conflict in the world's youngest nation.

He also called for unhindered access to the people affected by the conflict that the UN team and humanitarian workers could provide assistance to them.

"The United Nations missions are now accommodating more than 150,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs). The United Nations has never been designed or trained to accommodate so many IDPs. So, we are in a very much difficult position; we are doing our best to provide a life-saving support to them," he added.

In responding to a question about peace process efforts towards a solution to the crisis, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the AU and other partners are trying to assist the warring parties in that country to end the war.
