Canada rakes in 6 gold on day two of Pam Am Games

Xinhua, July 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Canadian athletes raked in 16 medals, including six gold, in Sunday's Pan American Games competition. With 10 gold, eight silver and six bronze, Canada continued to lead all nations in both gold and overall medals.

The winning began on Sunday morning with both Raphael Gagne, of Quebec City, and Emily Batty, of Brooklin, Ontario, winning the men's and women's mountain biking event.

Meanwhile, the Canadians continue to dominate at the diving tank. Jennifer Abel won gold and Pamela Ware took silver in the women's three-meter springboard, bringing the team's total medal count to five.

Calgary's Lynda Kiejko earned a gold medal in the women's 10-meter air pistol competition.

The host country also won double gold in rugby sevens competition. The Canadian men wrapped up the two-day competition with a 22-19 decision over Argentina after dramatic wins of 26-19 over the U.S. in the semifinals and 17-12 over Chile in the quarterfinals.

Earlier Sunday, the Canadian women defeated the U.S. 55-7 to win the inaugural women's rugby gold and go unbeaten in six games at the Pan Am action.

Canada's equestrian team earned a silver medal in team dressage, narrowly losing out to the United States.

The day also came with some disappointment as Canada failed to medal in the men's triathlon. It's the first time in Pan Am Games history Canada hasn't won a triathlon medal.

In open water swimming, Richard Weinberger of Moose Jaw, Sask., led the men's 10-kilometer event for most of the race before slipping to fourth. It was a disappointing finish for Weinberger, who entered the race as the defending Pan Am champion and won the bronze medal in the discipline at the 2012 London Games.

In water polo, Canada beat Cuba 14-7 to set up a gold-medal showdown with the United States on Tuesday.

In men's soccer, Canada opened with a 4-1 loss to Brazil.

The sand has settled and the weather is expected to be sunny as the beach volleyball competition gets underway on Monday. Endi
