Afghan chief executive meets UN envoy in Kabul

The Afghan government's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met with Nicholas Haysom, the top UN envoy in the country, on Sunday, said an official statement issued here.

"The two sides exchanged views on general security situation. The CEO also expressed his view about his latest trips to northern and southern provinces and provides Haysom the information about security situation there. They also discussed the election process and the reform of election process besides talking about the recent peace talks with the Taliban," the statement issued by Abdullah office said.

Haysom, who also heads the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), urged the Afghan government to speed up reform process in election law and elections commissions.

The Afghanistan's third parliamentary elections were expected to be held earlier this year. But the process has been delayed for an unknown time in the future.

The UN official also welcomed the direct talks held between Afghan government and Taliban representatives in Islamabad, Pakistan last week, saying the UNAMA supports the latest peace negotiations and it urges the parties to take the next steps towards a reconciliation and peace process. Endi
