Uganda's detained rebel leader faces murder charges: police

Xinhua, July 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ugandan police on Sunday said it will soon arraign the arrested Allied Democratic Force (ADF) rebel leader Jamil Mukulu in court to face murder charges.

Police Chief Kale Kayihura told reporters here at the national Special Operations Base in the eastern Ugandan district of Jinja that police have gathered enough evidence to pin Jamil Mukulu in Court for killing of moslem leaders in the country.

"He is still a suspect under the law. He will be condemned by the Courts of law," Kayihura said.

"I have assured him not to fear, he will face a fair trial," he added while parading Mukulu before reporters.

Gen. Kayihura said although the murder cases are the principal on which he was extradited from Tanzania, police intend to prefer more charges including those of terrorism and war crimes.

The police chief said Mukulu has been evading arrest for the last 20 years which forced the International Police to issue a red notice for him and the UN Security Council to declare him a fugitive.

Mukulu's rebel group has been causing havoc in neighboring eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where the outfit has kidnapped, maimed and recruited children in its ranks.

The ADF in the 1990's also launched grenade attacks in the Ugandan capital Kampla.

Mukulu is also wanted for the 1996 Mpondwe attack in the western Ugandan district of Kasese and the June 1998 Kichwamba Technical Institute massacre in the western district of Kabarole, in which about 80 students were killed.

Mukulu was arrested in Tanzania in March as he tried to procure a travel document for his child. He was extradited to Uganda this week. Endi
