Myanmar says CWC will come into force for Myanmar soon

Xinhua, July 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) will come into force for Myanmar soon.

According to a press release, Myanmar has deposited the instrument of ratification in New York.

By ratifying the treaty, Myanmar joins the main stream of international standard, commits to the principles and ideals of disarmament and enhances confidence building among nations, Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Man Lwin said in the release.

From security perspective, Myanmar will receive assistance from state parties if it is attacked by chemical weapons, he said, adding that more opportunities will be secured in import, transfer of chemicals and instruments and exchange of technical information.

Myanmar signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in January 1993, however taking time to ratify it out of domestic priorities and capacity constraint, according to the release. Endi
