Raimonds Vejonis, the new president of Latvia who took the oath of office on Wednesday, traveled to Estonia Thursday to meet with Estonian president, according to the Estonian Broadcasting Corporation (ERR).

The visit is the first official one for the new president. Vejonis, who is no stranger to Estonia's capital, having once studied in the Tallinn University of Technology.

His choice of Estonia as his first destinations is a sign of "close political, security, and economic, as well as of cultural and educational ties," the ERR report quoted Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves as saying.

The two leaders discussed issues like the Greek debt crisis, the refugee crisis and security situation, as well as bilateral, regional and transatlantic defense cooperation, the ERR report said, but gave no further details.

Vejonis, the fifth president of Latvia since the country regained its independence in 1991, was elected by the Latvian Parliament on June 3. Endit
