1st LD Writethru: U.S. dollar rises against euro amid Greece worries

Xinhua, July 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The U.S. dollar climbed against the euro on Monday as the Athens voted to reject the county's debt bailout terms.

The Greek people on Sunday gave an overwhelming "No" in the referendum on a rescue package from international creditors, dramatically raising the chance for the country to crash out of the Eurozone.

"This result is very regrettable for the future of Greece," Euro group President Jeroen Dijsselbloem said in a statement on Sunday.

The shared currency inched down nearly 0.6 percent till late trading on Monday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.14 percent at 96.251.

On the U.S. economic front, Institute for Supply Management's June service sector survey came out overall positive, with a composite index registered 56.0, slightly higher than the previous month's reading.

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1051 dollars from 1.1114 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound rose to 1.5603 dollars from 1.5570 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar went down to 0.7499 dollars from 0.7523 dollars.

The U.S. dollar bought 122.45 Japanese yen, lower than 122.79 yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar climbed to 0.9427 Swiss francs from 0.9404 Swiss francs, and it hiked to 1.2658 Canadian dollars from 1.2574 Canadian dollars. Endite
