Car bombs kill five in Libya's Derna

Xinhua, July 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least five people were killed and 15 others injured after two car bombs exploded in the eastern city of Derna, Libya's official LANA agency reported on Saturday.

The agency said the wounded include women and children, as well as the ex-chairman of local city council.

No group so far has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosions took place in southern Derna amid clashes between militia forces and Islamic State affiliates, and were followed by mortar shelling on civilian locations.

Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, has been witnessing a frayed political process after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled during the 2011 political turmoil.

The country is now deadlocked in a dogfight between the pro-secular army and Islamist militants, which has led to a security vacuum for homegrown extremism to brew.
