Tonga's King Tupou VI crowned

Xinhua, July 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Tonga's King Tupou VI was crowned on Saturday, three years after King Tupou V passed away.

At the Free Wesleyan Centenary Church in the Tongan capital of Nuku'alofa, King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u were crowned by Rev D'arcy Wood, a minister of the Uniting Church in Australia, local news website Matangi Tonga Online reported.

More than 1,000 guests, including foreign royal family members, heads of states, as well as diplomats filled the church to witness the ceremony.

As King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u entered the church, hundreds of school children sitting on traditional mats lined the entrance to form a guard of honor.

A massive fireworks display is expected Saturday night in the Pacific kingdom as part of the coronation celebrations, which have been ongoing for a week.

King Tupou V, King Tupou VI's elder bachelor brother, passed away in Hong Kong in March 2012 at the age of 63. Endi
