Gjirokastra, Berat of Albania removed from World Heritage in Danger list

Xinhua, July 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has decided to remove Gjirokastra and Berat, two Albanian cities harboring architectures typical of the Ottoman period, from the List of World Heritage in Danger, Minister of Culture Mirela Kumbaro said Friday.

The decision was made after the committee evaluated the management of the cities, which are rare examples of typical Ottoman architecture, the Albanian Daily News quoted Kumbaro as saying.

The committee then sent a resolution to the Albanian Ministry of Culture, saying that Gjirokastra and Berat will stop being included in the List of World Heritage in Danger. This resolution evaluated the reforms and measures taken by the Albanian government for implementing recommendations of the World Heritage Committee and the Monitoring Mission in 2015.

The World Heritage Center presented complaints to Albania during 2011-2013, saying construction without permits next to these historical monuments was intolerable and alarming. Endit
