The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) said on Thursday that 41,900 marriages took place in Switzerland in 2014, representing a 5.3 percent increase compared to 2013, while 85,300 births (a 3.1 percent increase) were registered last year.
These trends come against the backdrop of a decreasing divorce rate, with the number of people ending their marriages in the confederation declining from 17,100 in 2013 to 16,700 a year later.
FSO revealed that if the 2014 divorce rate remains the same in the future, this would mean that 2 out 5 marriages, or 40.9 percent, would end in divorce, a significant decrease compared to Switzerland's divorce rate in 2006, which stood at 52 percent.
FSO furthermore indicated that the number of out of wedlock births (21.7 percent in 2014) were on the rise, with 18,500 registered last year, a thousand more than a year prior.
According to European statistics, the figures relating to the number of births occurring out of wedlock place Switzerland approximately at the same level as Poland (23.4 percent), far behind Slovenia (59.1 percent) and ahead of Turkey (2.7 percent).
Figures also show that the country's mortality rate decreased by 1.6 percent in 2014, with 63,900 reported deaths, while life expectancy at birth has increased, reaching 81 years for men and 85.2 years for women in 2014. Endite
