Vietnamese defense minister undergoes operation in France

Xinhua, July 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnamese Defense Minister General Phung Quang Thanh has just undergone a operation in France, the online version of local newspaper Tuoi Tre (Youth) reported early Thursday.

On July 1, Vietnam's Central Healthcare and Protection Committee said General Thanh went to France for disease treatment one week ago. He underwent an operation on June 30 evening, maybe involving a lung ulcer, the newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper's source, Thanh suffered a chest injury in the wartime, and the injury has gradually turned part of his lung into an ulcer.

Two months ago, Thanh started to have severe coughs. According to biopsy results, he has not suffered from cancer. However, the lung ulcer and severe coughs are worrying signs of the disease, said the newspaper.

Thanh met with French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Paris on June 19 during the Vietnamese Defence Ministry delegation' s working visit to Europe. Thanh affirmed Vietnam always treasures relations with France, stressing that the strategic partnership of the two countries brings new opportunities and potentials for cooperation in various fields including defence, Vietnam News Agency reported recently.
