Urgent: Ex-Sri Lankan president to contest polls

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said on Wednesday that he will contest the August 17 parliamentary elections "on the request of the people" and will look to form a new government.

Rajapakse made the remarks a day after President Maithripala Sirisena officially announced that he would not nominate the former president as the prime ministerial candidate from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Rajapakse is a member of the UPFA chaired by Sirisena. Endi
