Norway's prosecutors seek 8 years' imprisonment for terrorist suspect

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Norway's prosecutors have asked for eights years' imprisonment for a suspect who is charged with fighting for terrorist groups in Syria, local media reported on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say Ishaq Ahmed, a 24-year-old Norwegian from the county of Ostfold in southeastern Norway, traveled to Syria in 2013 and fought for militant groups including Islamic State (IS) and Jabath Al Nusra, according to local broadcaster TV 2.

Ahmed was shot in the leg in Syria and returned to Norway in February 2014. He was then charged with terrorist activities, the TV 2 report said.

He was charged with "having planned or prepared a terrorist act by conspiring with someone to commit such an offense" and "having participated in, recruited members or provided financial or other material support to a terrorist organization," according to news agency NTB.

Ahmed has denied culpability and argued that he went to Syria to carry out relief work, NTB reported.

Ahmed's trial is the second one in Norway concerning its citizens who are accused of having participated in combat operations for the IS extremist group in Syria and Iraq.

Last month a Norwegian court sentenced three men to jail after they were convicted of joining or supporting the IS group in Syria. Endit
