1st Ld: Obama hails "new, more ambitious chapter" in U.S.-Brazil relations

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's visit to the U.S. "marks one more step in a new, more ambitious chapter" in the relationship between the two countries, U.S. President Barack Obama said Tuesday.

A cornerstone of the U.S. engagement with Latin America is a strong partnership with Brazil, Obama claimed at a joint press conference with Rousseff at the White House, adding that "our two nations are natural partners in the Americas and around the world. "

Rousseff's visit came amid signs that the two countries have moved past tensions caused by a spying scandal nearly two years ago. The Brazilian President canceled a planned visit to the U.S. in late 2013 in a response to revelations by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden that the U.S. had spied on her.
